A year ago, I “lost” my job…
This is something quite common these days in the pharma industry. I’m not the only one. Maybe it just happened “to” you too?… And here’s how I like to look at this: it’s a blessing, it’s an opportunity, it’s the sign that something new can be thought, conceived and built. It doesn’t happen “to” you, it happens “FOR” you.
I didn’t lose my job. It was not undesired, it was not unexpected, it was welcomed. I wanted to do something else and, for years, I didn’t have the courage to take any leap of faith into the unknown.
As the breadwinner of a family of 3+, making good income, and as a successful professional you don’t just quit and start a new business overnight. You think it through. You convince yourself it’s not the right time. You wait for a sign that it’s time and the sign never comes (or you don’t see it). You put conditions before even considering what next step you could take in the direction of a dream that you discard as even possible.
So I started a new business…
And, no, it didn’t start overnight. I knew there were barriers to make some meaningful changes in my life. I had started the thought process several years ago but I was still stuck. TWO THINGS came into my line of sight that changes everything.
1. Strategic planning. I’m not talking business but personal planning. Making a plan for yourself for the next 10 years and then retroplanning to 5 years, 3 years, 1 year, quarterly, monthly, weekly… Without the 10 year outlook, it doesn’t really make sense to plan forward. You want to know the long term destination or the compass will be off.
2. Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT or tapping. I discovered this was a simple practice that could help me tremendously. The strategic plan made it clear that becoming certified in EFT was a must and I put that in motion a couple of years ago.
What did I learn?
I learned that most of our self talk and barriers in life are trauma-generated. It can be from big T trauma, it’s more often from little t trauma, from seemingly INSIGNIFICANT events in our childhood that our primitive brain uses to form our world view, our perception of self in a way that seems carved in stone. It’s not carved in stone. Neuroscience shows that neuroplasticity is real, that you can change connections in your brain and map your core beliefs in different ways. Tapping is one way to do this. It’s simple, it’s fast, it’s sometimes impressive how effective it can be. Our thoughts are also powerful at helping us shift our feelings/emotions and model our behaviors differently for better life results. That’s why I also went into a DreamBuilder® coaching training. Those two together are powerful in helping people live a life they love even more.
